Introduction: Around 1200 cases of mortality due to drowning occur in Iran annually which is considered as a serious problem. In Northern provinces of Guilan and Mazandaran it stands as the second cause of deaths.
Objectives: In this study we evaluated the mortality rates of Drowning in Rasht city which is located near the Caspian Sea as a famous Tourist destination.
Materials and Methods: This Cross-Sectional Descriptive study was performed on the files belonging to drowning victims whose bodies were autopsied in the Central Forensic Office of Guilan Province from 1388 to 1391. Checklists were filled considering demographic data, date, location of the accident, etc for the cases and were analyzed.
Results: A total number of 144 cases were enrolled in the study. Males were the majority of cases (90.3%). The average of age was 27.58±13.13 years old and the summer, Mordad and Friday were the season (59%), month (24.3%) and Day (21.5%) respectively with highest mortality rates. Bandare Anzali was the city with most death cases (23.9%). Most of the victims didn't know how to swim (74.5%).
Conclusion: Drowning is a preventable event and swimming education in schools seems mandatory and beneficial for the youth.
